Have you decided your new year’s resolutions for 2018 yet? New year/New you resolutions always feel like great ideas when January 1st ticks around (after all, it’s good to have something to aim for) but, unless we’ve got a lot of willpower, most of us find our good intentions fading slowly away by the time February approaches.
Why is that? It’s not because they stop being important to us and we don’t want to do them, and we know we can achieve whatever we want if we’re determined enough to succeed. But the reality is that daily life just gets too busy, and before we know it we’re back on the same track as last year. That’s why, if you’re going to stick to your valuable new year’s resolutions and make them part of your daily life, you have to make them as easy as possible – and that’s great news where your beauty regime is concerned, because we’ve got five top tips that will keep you looking fabulous all year round!
Drink more water
Yes, this is the healthy resolution we all try to stick to but for most of us it just gets weirdly difficult. But the fact is, drinking more water will keep you hydrated and alert and it’s essential for a healthy complexion. Just think about it – your skin is composed of trillions of cells (37.2 trillion according to one incredible estimate) and all those cells are made up of water. If your cells aren’t receiving enough water they’re prone to damage both inside and out. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day will help replenish your cells and rid your body and skin of toxins. Don’t expect overnight results, but after two or three weeks you should start to see and feel some positive changes.
Sunscreen isn’t just for sunny days!
Your skin can be damaged by sunlight at any time of year, even when it looks grey and cloudy outside, so get into the habit of applying sunscreen every morning. You’ll not only be protecting your precious complexion from UV damage, you’ll also be wowing the world with your glowing hydrated skin tone and helping guard against cancer.
Leave those spots alone!
We know, that’s easier said than done because who can resist picking or popping a tantalising new pimple? But the fact is that even touching a blemish can spread further infection and make the breakout even worse. Instead, wrap some crushed ice inside a cloth and hold it against the affected area to reduce redness and swelling, and use a clean cotton swab to apply a dab of fresh lemon juice to the pimple before you go to bed. The compounds in green tea are also useful for fighting acne and witch hazel is a fantastic astringent – just pour some onto a cotton ball and gently wipe your face every morning and night.
Always remove your makeup before bedtime
It’s so tempting just to snuggle under the duvet after a busy day or a long night and convince yourself that sleeping with your makeup on isn’t so terrible, but you’re risking clogging up your pores and not giving your skin the chance to recover from oxidative stress (like the effects of air pollution). Over time, this can result in nasty breakouts, fine lines and premature ageing. But you don’t have to make a drama out of make-up removal, simply keep a handful of cleansing wipes on your bedside table so you can remove the pesky grime and cosmetic residue without even leaving your pillow.
Put deep cleansing on your weekly schedule
The saying goes that your body is your temple, and every temple needs to be deep cleaned properly now and again. Once a week, make a date with a cleansing mask to get rid of the dirt and oily congestion that builds up in your pores. Don’t look upon this as a chore but as a chance to give yourself some well-deserved ‘me time’. Actually, why not push the boat out and enjoy a lovely relaxing bath as well? Add a detoxifying oil to the water (terrific for boosting circulation) and maybe even light a calming aromatherapy candle (lavender’s an especially therapeutic scent) but be careful not to fall asleep!
So there you go, five quick and easy beauty resolutions you’ll be able to stick to all year round. And don’t forget to check back regularly throughout 2018 because we’ll have lots of other useful advice to share with all you lovely readers.
Have a very Happy and Gorgeous New Year, everybody! See you in January!
