Stand by for your pre-holiday beauty countdown!
We’re well and truly in the middle of summer which means, for many of us, that the long-awaited holiday we’ve been dreaming about all year is finally not too far away. But how can you make sure you look and feel as fabulous as possible while you’re sunning yourself on some exotic beach, or even lounging on a deck chair in your own back garden? Well, like most things that are beauty related, it’s all in the preparation!
Three weeks before your holiday… it’s time to buff, cleanse and detoxify!
Think about starting every day with a glass or two of spring water combined with the juice from a full lemon. The lemon juice has many benefits, including Vitamin C, antioxidants and potassium, and water plays a vital role in detoxification. Limiting your coffee intake drinking a decaf tea (like ginger, peppermint or licorice) between meals could also help to supercharge your digestion.
Before showering, you could use a skin brush to exfoliate dead skin and stimulate your lymphatic system. Brush your entire body, beginning with your feet and moving upwards towards your heart. Alternatively, you could use a bath mitt with an exfoliating body wash or salt scrub and massage your skin in a gentle circular motion.
When you step out of the shower, pat your skin dry and apply a moisturiser that contains a hydration-friendly ingredient like jojoba or shea butter.
Two weeks before your holiday… get ready to glow!
Even if you’re heading for the sunshine, you may want to work on a healthy pre-holiday glow. For the best results, use a gradually formulating self-tanner and build your colour slowly and more naturally over several applications, but make sure your skin is totally dry and properly exfoliated before you apply it. Use a lightweight moisturiser to prepare your skin before you apply the self-tanner and only use a small amount of self-tanner at a time, beginning at your feet and working it into your skin with even circular strokes to avoid leaving behind dark streaks and patches.
One week to go… get waxing, threading and buffing!
Now it’s time to do that last-minute beauty maintenance! If you want to remove any excess body hair or shape your brows so they’ll look perfectly beach-ready, make sure you wax or thread at least two or three days before your holiday to reduce the chances of redness and irritation. For the best de-fuzzing results, exfoliate the area the night or morning before your appointment and then, after your appointment, apply a cool compress to close pores and use aloe vera gel to soothe your skin. Aloe vera’s anti-inflammatory properties will help your skin repair even faster.
Continuing to gently buff away your dead skin cells won’t only make your skin look fresher, it will stimulate blood flow, reduce the appearance of cellulite and help you maintain your even tan. It will encourage body creams to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Don’t worry, though – it’s not all hard work! A couple of days before your hols, treat yourself to a gorgeous pre-vacation manicure and pedicure so your hands and feet will look as stunning and eye-catching as the rest of you!
If you’re going to get on a plane, give your skin a thorough cleanse before boarding and avoid wearing heavy make-up because it can blog up your pores. Also, apply a moisturiser throughout the flight to keep your skin hydrated, but avoid spritzing your face because that may dry out your skin even more.
