About the course:

If you are looking to embark on a career as a nail technician, our combined Nail Technology course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, practical skills and the industry-required qualification to allow you to work in a salon, nail bar or for yourself.

The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma in Nail Treatments is to enable learners to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Nail treatments. Qualifications in Nail Treatments and Technology is now becoming the industry required standard for those looking to gain employment within a salon. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of junior nail technician.

Overview

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma in Nail Treatments (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a junior nail technician.

This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior nail technician including: providing manicure and pedicure treatments, providing nail art, health and safety and client care and communication.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and nail products and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare and enhance the nails and cuticles on the hands and feet using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you in communicating effectively with clients.

How long is the course?

The course can be studied 1 day a week for 40 weeks, or 2 days a week for 20 weeks.

When does the course start?

We have start dates available throughout the year. As the courses are modular, you are able to join the course when the next module begins after completing induction days.

Are there any entry requirements?

You do not need any previous beauty experience. On application, you will be required to complete Maths and English assessments, achieving a minimum of an Entry Level 3.

Where can I study this course?

You can study the Nail Technology course in our Chiswick (West London) or Borehamwood (Hertfordshire) academies.

Qualification Structure

Mandatory Units:

  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Provide manicure treatments
  • Provide pedicure treatments
  • Apply and maintain nail enhancements
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Maintaining personal health and wellbeing

Optional Units:

  • Display stock to promote sales in a salon
  • Airbrush designs for nails
  • Design and apply nail art
The main skills the learner will perform are:
  • Care of the nails on the hand including hand massage and application of polish
  • Care of the nails on the feet including foot massage and application of polish
  • Applying and maintaining nail enhancements – liquid and powder, gel and wraps
  • Designing and applying nail art
  • The use of airbrushes in nail art design

The learner will also develop knowledge about the structure and functions of the nails and skin, contraindications to treatment, nail and skin analysis, related health and safety and client care and communication which is essential in order to work and be successful in the industry.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a nail technician. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a nail technician. Career opportunities as a nail technician exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Working in a commercial nail or beauty salon.
  • Working in a retail concession nail bar.
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.
Who supports this qualification?

This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing you for a career as a nail technician. Holders of this qualification are eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.

Course Cost and Funding

The course is £3,345 each. All students will be required to purchase a uniform and kit, the kit costing between £64 and £126.

For all Level 3 qualifications, we accept the Advanced Learner Loan. If you are aged over 19, and you are unemployed, haven’t received a full Level 3 qualification before and are in receipt of benefits and looking to return to work then you may be able to get part of the course government funded. These spaces are limited and will be confirmed at interview.
