The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology is to prepare you to enter the specific sector of beauty therapy as a nail technician. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of a nail technician.

The main aim of the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology is to enable learners to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Nail Technology treatments. Qualifications in Nail Technology is now becoming the industry required standard for those looking to gain employment within a salon. This course will enable you to provide a complete nail technology service and work as a professional nail technician.

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a nail technician.

What the qualification covers:
The main skills the Learner will perform are:
Care of the nails on the hand including hand massage and application of polish
Care of the nails on the feet including foot massage and application of polish
Applying and maintaining nail enhancements - liquid and powder, gel and wraps
Designing and applying nail art
The use of airbrushes in nail art design

The Learner will also develop knowledge and client care and communication which is essential in order to work and be successful in the industry.

Throughout this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, about the structure and functions of the nails and skin, contraindications to treatment, nail and skin analysis, related health and safety, client care and nail products and equipment. You will develop a range of technical skills enabling you to provide a variety of nail enhancement treatments using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a nail technician. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a nail technician. Career opportunities as a nail technician exist in a variety of contexts, including:

Who supports this qualification? 
This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing you for a career as a junior nail technician. Holders of this qualification are eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.
Qualification Structure
Mandatory Units:
Provide manicure treatments
Provide pedicure treatments
Apply and maintain nail enhancements
Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
Maintaining personal health and wellbeing

Optional Units:
Display stock to promote sales in a salon
Airbrush designs for nails
Design and apply nail art

Course Fee: The qualification fee to include Level 2 & Level 3 is £2,787.50 + VAT (£3,345.00). There are no additional registration or certification fees. All students will be required to purchase a uniform and product kit costing £236.00 Total fee: £3,581.00 including VAT.

You can finance this course through the Advanced Learner Loan or our finance instalment payment plan. The £236.00 fee for the uniform and kit are not covered in the Advanced Learner Loan.

Flexible Study Options: You can study for these programmes part-time with attendance at the Academy either on two days during the week or evening attendance or weekend attendance.

Duration: 15 weeks if studied for 2 days a week or 30 weeks if studied over 2 evenings a week or 30 weeks if studied one day a week.

Entry Requirement: There are no formal entry requirements but a good command of written and verbal English language is required.

If you wish to work as a mobile therapist or offer occasional treatments from home, you will be sufficiently qualified with The VTCT Diploma in Nail Technology. All students receive the Diploma which allows you to gain public liability (beauty) insurance to work with paying clients from home or mobile. It allows you to begin earning straight away, even while working towards a qualification.
Professional Body Membership and Insurance
Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance can be obtained via The Complementary Therapists Association ( and other Industry Associations who recognise the VTCT Diploma.
